Authorities reported that a recent accident on the George Washington Bridge may have involved a drunk driver. According to law enforcement officials, there was an open bottle of vodka in one of the vehicles involved in the August 7 incident.
Purportedly, a 55-year-old man was driving a Porsche 911 on the GWB toward New Jersey when he collided with a semi-truck at about 12:30 a.m. The collision left the Porsche with so much bodily damage that the vehicle was hardly recognizable. Reportedly, officials took some four hours to clear the wreckage from the accident scene. As a result of the collision, the 55-year-old man suffered a broken leg, authorities reported. Meanwhile, the driver of the semi-truck did not report suffering any injuries in the accident.
Officials allege that the 55-year-old Porsche driver smelled like alcohol at the accident scene and possessed an open bottle of Vodka in his vehicle. He is facing charges of DWI and assault by auto as well as summonses for having an open container of alcohol in his car and reckless driving. It was not clear in the immediate aftermath of the event whether officials administered chemical sobriety testing to measure the drivers’ blood alcohol content.
If convicted, the man facing drunk-driving charges in this case may encounter a variety of penalties. These include jail time, mandatory attendance at alcohol education programs, community service, fines and a driver’s license suspension. These consequences are intended to be life-altering, and they reflect the state’s aggressive approach toward enforcing and prosecuting its DUI laws.
