How to handle a drunk driving stop in New Jersey

by | Aug 30, 2014 | Drunk Driving

Labor Day weekend is supposed to be one last fun blast of summer. It’s a time to fire up the barbeque, get to baseball games and have a good time. This may not be the same for  law enforcement officers in New Jersey, since they are charged with keeping roads safe. With an extended number of people expected on the roads this weekend, a number of people may be stopped on suspicion of DUI or DWI.

Because of this, it is important to know how to handle stops by the police. Of course, it may not always be possible to avoid a drunk driving charge, but knowing what to expect can help.

Stay calm and be polite – Indeed, it is not a picnic to be stopped by the police. But being sarcastic or aggressive may lead the officer to ask you to get out of the car. Once out of the car, it is more than likely that you will be arrested.  To avoid this situation, keep calm and be polite.

Take things slow – To police officers, quick moves are seen as acts of aggression, so it’s no surprise that they will react to such moves with higher levels of force. With this in mind, it may not be the best idea to reach quickly for your registration. The cop may be even quicker to his (or her) gun. It may be better to ask the officer if you can each for something before you do it.

Maintain eye contact – Eye contact can reveal a lot about you. A cold stare could mean an aggressive stance. Bloodshot eyes may mean intoxication. Sleepy eyes may suggest marijuana use.So as we mentioned previously, a cool, polite rapport with your eyes can help.
