Little Falls police accuse a man of driving while intoxicated after he walked to the police on April 11.Police say that the man is a teacher and is a former township council member in Little Falls, New Jersey.
The evening of the DWI arrest, authorities were investigating a report of a hit-and-run accident. Officers who responded to the accident scene found a car that authorities believe was hit while it was parked along the roadside. The car apparently was shoved onto the curb.
Police later found an unattended BMW parked around the corner from the crash scene. Investigators say that the BMW displayed signs of damage and believe it had been involved in the crash with the parked car. Meanwhile, a woman called police to say that her husband was walking to the police station.
A detective with Little Falls Police says that the owner of the damaged BMW showed up at the police station where he was investigated for impairment. He has been charged with DWI, leaving an accident scene and failing to report an accident, despite allegedly walking to police headquarters.
In general, New Jersey law prohibits operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. However, the law does not necessarily require that law enforcement observe the operation of the vehicle.
