On May 31, a man was taken into police custody and charged with drunk driving following a two-vehicle collision in Lacey. According to local police, the 24-year-old man is facing a number of additional charges in connection with the incident, including assault by auto, driving while on the suspended list, reckless driving and resisting arrest by flight. Police say that bail in the case has been set at $25,000.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Newark Avenue and Lacey Road, and media sources report that authorities responded to the crash at 1:04 a.m. Although few details regarding the incident have been released, sources indicate that both the man and the driver of the car that he struck were hurt in the accident and that the alleged drunk driver fled the scene before law enforcement officials arrived.
Officers subsequently located the man on Alpine Street approximately one block from the crash site, and he was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his minor injuries. Reports indicate that the other driver was treated at the scene and released. At the time of the report, the case was under investigation by Lacey police.
A DUI charge could have serious ramifications for a driver if a conviction is subsequently obtained. The possible consequences could include jail time, fines, loss of driving privileges, installation of an ignition interlock device on the convicted person’s vehicle and community service. In some situations, however, it is possible that an attorney could challenge the accuracy of the field sobriety tests that were administered, possibly resulting in a dismissal or reduction of the charge.
