A New Jersey teenager was taken into police custody on suspicion of drunk driving after his vehicle collided with a utility pole on July 18. The one-car crash occurred near the Rivers Edge Drive intersection in Toms River at approximately 7 a.m.
According to the authorities, an 18-year-old male was driving a Ford Explorer on Whitesville Road when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The Ford slammed into a utility pole, causing electricity outages in the town. Work crews were called to the scene to make necessary repairs and help restore power. The 18-year-old was not injured in the crash. He was ultimately charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence.
When individuals are accused of driving under the influence, there are a number of different consequences that they may face depending on their prior drunk driving record and the seriousness of the incident. For example, the person may face jail time, be required to do community service and even have their license suspended for a certain amount of time.
In the state of New Jersey, the legal drinking age is 21. Anyone who is accused of drinking under the legal age may face additional consequences. For example, the person could lose any scholarships for colleges that they have earned or even be kicked out of their higher education program. An attorney can potentially work out an agreement where the underage person is required to take alcohol classes and complete a certain amount of community service in return for having the charge taken off the person’s criminal record.
