Law enforcement authorities with the New Jersey State Police reportedly took four people into custody on July 18 during a DUI checkpoint they had set up on the Garden State Parkway. According to reports, the checkpoint was set up in the northbound lanes near the PNC Arts Center near Holmdel.
Officers reported all four are now facing charges of driving while intoxicated. They reported that one of the four was also involved in an accident. In addition to those four, 10 other drivers received tickets for various traffic infractions. Police said all drivers who passed through the checkpoint were provided with pamphlets about the dangers of drinking while driving.
A total of 369 vehicles were reportedly stopped during the checkpoint. Authorities report that between 2012 and 2014, more than 1,000 arrests were made in the area around the PNC Arts Center for driving and drinking. In 2014, 79 accidents happened in the same area.
It is common for law enforcement authorities to use DUI checkpoints as a method of catching people who are allegedly drinking and driving. Such checkpoints have been found to be legal.
