Rescue workers needed to free three people from a wrecked yellow Ford Mustang that crashed into a tree on Mechlin Corner Road in Union Township. Injuries among the passengers ranged from minor to serious.
A State Police spokesman said a 23-year-old male from the township went to Hunterdon Medical Center with slight injuries. A woman, 51, accompanied him to the same hospital, complaining of back pain. The 19-year-old female crash victim required helicopter transport by State Police NorthStar to Morristown Medical Center. She reportedly suffered from a neck injury.
As for the driver of the Mustang, he was uninjured, and police charged the 51-year-old man from Maplewood with reckless driving and driving while intoxicated. Police alleged that his vehicle went over the center yellow lines before veering off the road into a tree near Rachel Court. The crash occurred at approximately 11 p.m. on Oct. 3. The road was closed until shortly after midnight while rescue crews attended the accident scene.
A person convicted of reckless driving and intoxication could face serious consequences, including loss of driver’s license, jail time and fines.
