How many drinks do you think takes to get you to the legal DUI limit? It is general knowledge that in New Jersey and the rest of the U.S., the legal limit for drunk driving cases is 0.08 percent blood alcohol concentration. The law can get more complicated, but that is the rule of thumb that most drivers rely upon.
How quickly some might reach that legal limit varies, depending on various scientific and behavioral factors. Those who do drink and then plan to drive might have their consumption habit down to a tested science. Maybe someone knows he can have three beers and still be good to drive.
If the National Traffic Safety Board has its way, however, drivers throughout the country will have to shift their drinking habits to work out a new legal-to-drive equation.
Earlier this month, the NTSB released a familiar drunk driving recommendation. The safety group believes that the country should reduce the BAC limit to 0.05 percent rather than stay at the current 0.08 percent limit. This is a repeated recommendation from the NTSB, but there is little to show that states want to adopt this stricter rule this time around either.
Even a representative for MADD believes that the 0.08 BAC limit is suitable. Rather than trying to lower the limit, safety advocates suggest that a campaign to increase the use of ignition interlock devices and to increase the visibility of law enforcement will do more for the country’s DUI-related deaths.
