The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” DUI campaign will begin on Aug. 18 and affect the entire state of New Jersey through Sept. 4. State and local law enforcement officials will be out in force, setting up drunk driving checkpoints and roving patrols designed to look for and arrest impaired drivers.
According to the Acting Director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, too many people are still choosing to drive while inebriated. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” is a zero tolerance drunk driving campaign. Any drivers discovered who are inebriated behind the wheel will be arrested, the Acting Director said.
Summer is a busy driving season in New Jersey, and with more drivers on the road, it also means the potential for more drunk drivers. The campaign is also intended to curb drunk driving during busy Labor Day weekend, and increase public awareness of the dangers of drunk driving. Educational campaigns will include television and radio ads, banners, posters and mobile video display ads.
One of the reasons why so many law enforcement agencies are on board is because the Division of Highway Traffic Safety (DHTS) will give grants out to participating local police stations in New Jersey. Last year, authorities throughout the state arrested 1,648 allegedly intoxicated drivers.
With increased enforcement efforts, and an increased number of arrests, it’s also likely that there will be a lot of mistaken or inappropriate arrests made by police in the state.
